Library Quilting Club
3. Work in Progress
We prepared everything for girls (and boys) age 9-11 (grades 3-5). In reality kids 6-15 joined the club. They were all very interested, very excited, and very motivated. And everyone got in.
First, everyone tried to thread the needle and make a knot. With adult help everyone suceeded. Then, patches had to be positioned in a design. No adult help was needed at this step. Now it was time to sew patches. Everyone did extremely well. Seams were straight enough and stitches were small enough to make 9-patch lay flat after pressing. Of course, adults were helping to press. And adults were helping to square off the finished block with rotary cutter.
During the second class machines came out. Older girls learned to use them instantly and enjoyed it a lot. They announced that sewing on a machine is much easier than by hand.
After tops were done they were quilted on a PC Quilter.
Then it was a binding time. Binding was very hard and long for everyone. Personally, I do not know why. I enjoy it - it is very relaxing, and results are amazing. But kids did not like it.
Several kids had smaller brothers and sisters. They played on a floor and ran around.
